Why doesn't treat-based recall work at the beach or park?
Because dogs, birds, smells and freedom are higher-value than treats. Your treat might be worth 5/10, the dog park is 10/10. You can't out-treat real-world rewards. You need consequences (e-collar correction, long-line correction) that make ignoring you unrewarding.
Do I need an e-collar for recall training?
For reliable, distraction-proof, off-leash recall—yes. You can get basic recall without e-collars, but it won't work with high distractions. If you only need your dog to come in the backyard, e-collar isn't necessary. For beach/park freedom, it's the most reliable tool.
Is e-collar training cruel or painful?
No, when done correctly. Modern e-collars (like we use) deliver gentle sensations at low levels—like a TENS machine. We condition dogs properly over 1-2 weeks. Dogs learn the sensation predicts a correction, then respond before feeling discomfort. Not painful, just clear communication.
How long does recall training take?
Our E-Collar Recall Package is 6 sessions over 4-6 weeks. After training, you'll have bombproof recall. Basic recall (on long-line only) takes 3-4 weeks. Off-leash distraction-proof recall takes 6-8 weeks with e-collar conditioning.
