West Auckland is a brilliant place to train a dog precisely because it never gives you a quiet, controlled environment to hide in. From the foreshore walkways out on the Te Atatū Peninsula to the wild black sand of Bethells, your dog meets real distractions every single day. I train your dog to stay calm and switched on around all of it, not just in the quiet of your lounge, so the manners you build at home actually hold up out in the real world.
The biggest challenge out here is birdlife. The Te Atatū foreshore is full of dotterel, pūkeko and oystercatchers, and that is a serious pull for a dog with any prey drive, especially when those paths are signposted on-leash to protect the birds. I build a rock-solid 'leave it' and a recall that holds under that kind of temptation. Add in the busy café and shop precinct on the peninsula, where your dog has to settle past foot traffic and other dogs, and the wide open surf beaches where recall genuinely matters for safety, and you have everything you need to build a properly reliable dog.
I work in balanced training, which means I use all four quadrants of operant conditioning and tailor the approach to your dog rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all method. I start in your home, where most of the real problems actually live, around the door, the lead, the front gate, and we get the foundations solid there first. Then we take it on location to the spots you use every week, whether that is the foreshore loop or a local park, so your dog learns to listen to you exactly where you need it most.

Train Where You Walk
We train your dog at the actual locations you walk them. Real world training for real world reliability.
A flat 4km loop of boardwalk, concrete and gravel with open harbour views where dogs must stay on-leash to protect the native dotterel, pūkeko and oystercatchers, which makes it the perfect place to drill loose-lead walking and a reliable 'leave it' around wildlife.
A rugged west-coast surf beach where dogs must be on-leash from the car park past the lagoon and across the main beach during the dotterel breeding season (roughly Labour Weekend through to Easter) and can go off-leash on the main beach in winter, so it is where I build recall and impulse control around open water and changing rules.
A handy local park in Te Atatū South where the council default of on-leash applies unless a section is signposted otherwise, giving us a calmer everyday setting to lock in heelwork, sit-stays and steady greetings close to home.
Plus all local reserves, walkways and neighbourhood streets in West Auckland and surrounding areas.

Common Questions
The main Te Atatū Peninsula foreshore walkway is on-leash to protect the native birdlife, so do not rely on off-leash access along that path. Off-leash spots in West Auckland change with the season and the specific park, so I always recommend checking the individual park page on the Auckland Council site, and I build your dog's recall to a standard where off-leash is genuinely safe wherever it is allowed.
It depends on the time of year. During the dotterel breeding season, roughly Labour Weekend through to Easter, dogs must be on-leash from the car park past the lagoon and along the main beach. Outside that window in winter the main beach is off-leash. Because the rules flip with the season and the surf can be strong, I train a recall and an emergency stop that hold up in that open environment.
Yes. I train in-home right across West Auckland, from Te Atatū Peninsula and Te Atatū South through to Henderson and West Harbour. We start in your house and section where most of the real issues show up, then take the training on location to the parks and walkways you actually use.
Every programme is tailored to your dog and what you want to achieve, so the best way to get an accurate idea is to have a look at the pricing page or book a consult with me. From there I can recommend the right approach for your dog and your goals.
