Taking Your Dog to Cornwallis Beach
A sheltered Manukau Harbour beach with calm water and an early-morning off-leash window, popular with West Auckland dog owners.
Off-leash rules
Off-leash from sunrise to 9am. On-leash and welcome outside those hours.
When: Off-leash sunrise to 9am. On-leash the rest of the day.
- • On-leash after 9am.
Facilities
Cornwallis sits on the Manukau Harbour out west, and the water is far calmer than the wild west-coast surf beaches nearby. That makes it a lovely spot for a dog who likes a paddle but is not ready for big waves.
The off-leash window is the early one, sunrise to 9am, so it suits an early start. After that it is on-leash, and it is still a beautiful place for a relaxed walk under the trees.
Make the most of it
The calm water at Cornwallis is great for building water confidence step by step, and the bush-lined reserve behind the sand is perfect for practising loose-lead walking on the way in and out.
Local tips
- It is an early-bird beach. Off-leash ends at 9am, so set the alarm.
- No fresh water on site, so pack your own.
- The shaded reserve behind the beach is a good on-leash option once the off-leash window closes.
