Taking Your Dog to Mangawhai
Wild Northland surf beach with genuine off-leash freedom, as long as you stay clear of the protected sandspit and the bird sanctuary.

Facilities
Mangawhai is one of my favourite places to take a dog who has earned some real freedom. The surf beach is long and open, and north of the first set of rocks your dog can run off-leash as long as they are genuinely under control.
The catch is the bird life. The sandspit and the Heads foreshore are protected, and dogs are flat-out banned there to keep the dotterels and oystercatchers safe. Stick to the surf beach north of the rocks, carry a leash and you and your dog get the best of the place without putting wildlife at risk.
Make the most of it
A beach like this only works if your recall is rock solid. Open space, other dogs, birds lifting off the dunes, it is a lot of temptation. If your dog will not come back first time around that kind of distraction, this is exactly the gap a few recall sessions close.
Local tips
- Walk in north of the first rocks. South of there you are heading toward the protected zones.
- Go early. The surf beach is quietest and calmest first thing, which is when recall practice actually sticks.
- No fresh water on the beach, so bring your own for a hot day.
