Rodney/Kaipara

Mangawhai

Wild Northland surf beach with genuine off-leash freedom, as long as you stay clear of the protected sandspit and the bird sanctuary.

Off-leash and under control on Mangawhai Surf Beach north of the first set of rocks. The sandspit and Mangawhai Heads foreshore are dog-prohibited bird sanctuaries.

Takapuna Beach

Long, central North Shore beach with a reliable off-leash window morning and evening, right on the doorstep of the city.

Off-leash 6pm to 10am in summer, and 2pm to 10am in winter. On-leash the rest of the day.

Orewa Beach

A long, safe Hibiscus Coast beach with a clear evening-to-morning off-leash window the whole family can enjoy.

Off-leash 5pm to 10am all year. On-leash through the middle of the day.

A sheltered Manukau Harbour beach with calm water and an early-morning off-leash window, popular with West Auckland dog owners.

Off-leash from sunrise to 9am. On-leash and welcome outside those hours.

Maraetai Beach

A calm, family-friendly East Auckland beach with sheltered water, a popular spot for a relaxed dog walk.

Maraetai follows Auckland's standard beach dog rules: off-leash before 10am and after 5pm in summer (1 December to 1 March), with longer off-leash hours in winter. On-leash through the busy middle of the day.

Omaha Beach

A beautiful white-sand Rodney beach with generous off-leash access, especially over winter when your dog can run all day.

Off-leash 5pm to 10am in summer, and off-leash at all times in winter.

Muriwai Beach

A dramatic black-sand west-coast beach with a huge off-leash dog exercise area, as long as you stay well away from the gannet colony.

Large off-leash dog exercise area from 450m north of Motutara Road and roughly 10km northwards. Dogs are prohibited at Maori Bay and Otakamiro Point (the gannet colony).

Meola Reef Dog Park

Central Auckland's only fully fenced off-leash dog park, with open fields, a separate fenced area and a dog swimming spot.

Fully fenced, dedicated off-leash dog exercise area. Dogs can be off-leash and under control throughout.

A large fenced off-leash dog park in Albany with plenty of room for a proper run, popular with North Shore dog owners.

Big King Reserve

A central Auckland volcanic cone (Te Tātua-a-Riukiuta) that is off-leash all year, with steep paths that are brilliant for burning energy and big city views.

Off-leash dog exercise area all year round, open 24 hours. Not fenced, so keep your dog in sight.

Craigavon Park

A super dog-friendly Blockhouse Bay park that is off-leash almost everywhere, with its own dog agility area to play on.

Off-leash everywhere in the park except near the playground. Has a dog agility area.

Ōwairaka Domain

A quieter Mt Albert domain that is mostly off-leash, a good choice for shy dogs who prefer a calmer space.

Off-leash through the domain, except on and near the sports fields where dogs are not allowed.
