Bear's Story
Growling at visitors and blocking doorways. Welcomes guests calmly with reliable obedience.
THE CHALLENGE
What Rachel Was Dealing With
Bear was a three-year-old Rottweiler who had become dangerously overprotective of Rachel. He growled at anyone who approached her — friends, family and delivery drivers alike. He had started blocking doorways to prevent people from entering rooms where Rachel was and had snapped at Rachel's partner when he tried to sit next to her on the couch.
The behaviour had escalated gradually since Bear was about 18 months old. What started as mild positioning had turned into active guarding. Rachel's social life had ground to a halt because she couldn't have anyone over without Bear creating a tense and potentially dangerous situation.
Rachel's partner was talking about Bear needing to go. Rachel loved Bear deeply but couldn't deny that a 50kg Rottweiler who growled at everyone was a serious liability. She needed help urgently.
OUR APPROACH
How We Trained Bear
Bear's protective aggression was rooted in a lack of clear leadership. He had taken on the role of Rachel's protector because nobody had told him that wasn't his job. Our approach was about restructuring the relationship so Bear could relax and trust that his humans had things under control.
We started with clear household rules and boundaries. Bear was no longer allowed on furniture, through doorways first or to position himself between Rachel and other people. These aren't punishment — they're communication. We were telling Bear "you don't need to guard, we've got this."
We then introduced structured socialisation with visitors. Bear learned a reliable "place" command where he went to his bed when the doorbell rang and stayed there until released. We gradually built positive associations with visitors through calm structured greetings rather than the chaotic rushing that had been happening.
THE RESULT
Bear Today
Bear is a completely different dog in social situations. When visitors arrive he goes to his place bed and waits to be released. When he greets people he does so calmly and politely — tail wagging, no tension.
The doorway blocking and couch guarding have stopped entirely. Rachel's partner can sit wherever he wants and Bear doesn't bat an eye. The growling at visitors is gone. Bear actually seems happier now that he doesn't carry the burden of being Rachel's protector.
Rachel's social life is back to normal. She hosted Christmas dinner for the first time in two years and Bear was an absolute star — greeting everyone politely and then settling on his bed while the family ate. Rachel's partner is now Bear's biggest fan.
“Bear went from a dog I was terrified would bite someone to the most polite greeter in Mt Eden. My partner went from wanting to rehome him to calling him his best mate. 100%K9 understood Bear's needs and gave us the tools to help him relax.”
