What Is E-Collar Training?
E-collar training (also called remote collar training or electronic collar training) is a method of dog training that uses a small, lightweight collar with a receiver to provide gentle electronic stimulation as a communication tool. The handler holds a remote transmitter that can send a signal to the collar at various intensity levels, allowing clear communication with the dog at distances where voice commands may not be heard or where distractions override verbal cues.
Modern e-collars use TENS technology (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) — the same medical-grade technology used in human physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment. Unlike the crude “shock collars” of decades past, today’s remote collars feature 0-100 adjustable levels, providing extremely precise control. At low working levels, the sensation is often compared to a gentle tap on the shoulder or the vibration of a mobile phone.
E-collar training is not a replacement for foundational training. It is a specialised tool used to proof commands a dog already knows, particularly for off-leash recall and distance communication. Under the LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) hierarchy — the professional standard adopted by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants (IAABC) — e-collars are positioned as a last resort tool, used only when positive reinforcement methods have been explored first.
E-Collar vs Shock Collar — What’s the Difference?
One of the most common misconceptions in dog training is that e-collars and shock collars are the same thing. They are not.
Old “Shock Collars” (1970s–1990s)
- One high-level painful setting only
- Crude, imprecise electrical technology
- Bulky, heavy and uncomfortable
- Used primarily as punishment
- No conditioning protocols
- Caused fear, pain and behavioural fallout
- No adjustability for individual dogs
Modern E-Collars (Current)
- 0-100 adjustable levels of precision
- Medical-grade TENS stimulation
- Lightweight, waterproof and comfortable
- Used as communication, not punishment
- Requires 2-3 weeks of conditioning
- No stress indicators when conditioned properly
- Tailored to individual dog sensitivity
The bottom line: Calling a modern e-collar a “shock collar” is like calling a smartphone a rotary phone. The technology, purpose and application are fundamentally different. However, modern e-collars can still cause harm if misused — which is exactly why professional training and proper conditioning are essential.
How E-Collar Training Works
Professional e-collar training follows a structured, research-backed process. It is never about pressing a button and hoping for the best.
Find the Working Level
Starting at zero, the trainer incrementally increases the stimulation level until they see a subtle response from your dog — an ear flick, head turn or slight posture change. This is the ‘working level’: the lowest point where your dog perceives the sensation without any discomfort. Every dog is different; a sensitive dog may respond at level 5-10, while a confident, high-drive dog may not notice until level 40-70.
Positive Conditioning (2-3 Weeks)
Your dog wears the collar during fun activities and experiences low-level stimulation paired with treats, praise and play. This teaches your dog that the sensation predicts positive things — not punishment. After 2-3 weeks, the dog has a neutral or positive association with the collar. Research shows conditioned dogs show no elevated cortisol (stress hormone) levels.
Pair With Known Commands
The e-collar is paired with commands your dog already knows on-leash. The sequence is: verbal command → pause → stimulation (if needed) → reward for compliance. The collar reminds the dog of a command they already understand — it does not teach new behaviours. This is the critical difference between professional e-collar training and misuse.
Proof in Real World Environments
Gradually increase distractions and distances. Work in parks with other dogs, trails with wildlife, beaches and busy areas. The e-collar provides clear communication at 50+ metres, giving your dog reliable off-leash freedom. Working levels are adjusted based on arousal state — higher excitement environments require slightly higher levels.
Important Note
Skipping the conditioning phase is the single biggest cause of welfare problems with e-collars. Dogs who receive unconditioned e-collar use show significant rises in cortisol levels, indicating stress. This is why DIY e-collar training is strongly discouraged and professional guidance is essential.
Is E-Collar Training Safe?
This is the most common question we receive — and it deserves an honest, evidence-based answer.
What the Research Says
The most comprehensive study on e-collar welfare was conducted by Cooper et al. (2014), published in PLOS One. The study found that “animals which were able to clearly associate the electric stimulus with their action and consequently were able to predict and control the stressor did not show considerable or persistent stress indicators.”
In other words, when dogs are properly conditioned to understand what the stimulation means and how to respond to it, they do not show elevated cortisol (stress hormone) levels. However, the same study found that dogs who received unconditioned or poorly timed e-collar use did show significant stress responses. The method matters enormously.

TENS Technology — Not Electric Shock
Modern e-collars use the same TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) technology that millions of people use daily for pain management and physiotherapy. The stimulation uses clean, smooth medical-grade Blunt (Wide) Pulse technology. At the low working levels used in professional training, the sensation is often imperceptible to the human hand.
Quality e-collars from manufacturers like E-Collar Technologies and Educator feature extremely precise level control, waterproof construction and safety features including automatic shut-off timers. The technology is a world away from the crude devices of previous decades.
When Is E-Collar Training Safe?
Safe When:
- Applied by a qualified professional
- Proper 2-3 week conditioning completed
- Correct working level identified
- Dog has existing command foundation
- Used for communication, not punishment
- Dog is confident and well socialised
- Timing is precise and consistent
Risky When:
- Used without professional guidance
- Conditioning phase is skipped
- Levels are too high for the dog
- Dog is fearful, anxious or reactive
- Used as punishment or correction only
- Timing is poor or inconsistent
- Applied before on-leash mastery
What Results Can You Expect?
When e-collar training is applied correctly, the results can be transformative for both dog and owner.
Reliable Off-Leash Recall
Your dog responds to recall commands consistently, even in high-distraction environments with other dogs, wildlife and exciting scents. Communication is clear at 50+ metres.
Emergency Safety Response
A life-saving emergency recall that works near roads, cliffs, waterways and other hazardous environments. Your dog stops and returns immediately when it matters most.
True Off-Leash Freedom
Enjoy hikes, beach walks and park visits with your dog off-leash and under reliable voice and e-collar control. More freedom with more safety.
Improved Engagement and Focus
Dogs trained with proper e-collar conditioning often show improved focus and engagement because they understand exactly what is being communicated at distance.
Distance Command Reliability
Commands like sit, down and stay are reliable at distance, not just when you are standing next to your dog with a treat pouch. Real world obedience in real world environments.
Confident, Calm Dog
A dog who understands clear communication is a confident dog. Properly conditioned e-collar training creates clarity and predictability, reducing uncertainty and anxiety.
Who Benefits From E-Collar Training?
E-collar training is not for every dog. It is a specialised tool for specific situations where off-leash reliability and distance communication are essential.
Dogs With Poor Recall
Dogs who ignore verbal commands in high-distraction environments — other dogs, wildlife, busy parks — and need reliable off-leash communication for safety.
Rural and Lifestyle Properties
Dogs on farms, lifestyle blocks or rural properties who need reliable recall around livestock, roads and large open spaces where a long lead is impractical.
High-Drive Working Dogs
Confident, high-energy dogs with strong prey drive or working instincts who need distance communication during hunting, sport or off-leash exercise.
Emergency Safety Situations
Dogs who need a reliable emergency recall near roads, cliffs, waterways or other hazardous environments where an immediate response could be life-saving.
Multi-Dog Households
Owners managing multiple dogs off-leash who need clear individual communication at distance, particularly during group walks or outdoor activities.
Previously Trained Dogs
Dogs with solid on-leash obedience who are ready for the next level of off-leash reliability and freedom in real world environments.
E-Collar Training Is NOT Suitable For:
- Fearful or anxious dogs
- Reactive dogs (use behaviour modification instead)
- Dogs with no prior training foundation
- Puppies under 6 months old
- Dogs with pain or medical conditions
- Punishment-based training approaches
