Huntaway Training
Training New Zealand's iconic working breed for suburban life
BREED PROFILE
Understanding Your Huntaway
Huntaways are New Zealand's own breed — strong, vocal and incredibly driven. They were bred to work independently, bark on command and cover vast distances. They're loyal, intelligent and energetic. Their deep, loud bark carries for kilometres, which was essential on farms but is problematic in suburbia.
COMMON CHALLENGES
What Auckland Huntaway Owners Struggle With
Excessive barking is the number one issue for urban Huntaway owners — neighbours complain and nothing seems to stop it because barking is literally what they were bred to do. High energy without outlets leads to destructive behaviour, digging and escaping. Many rescue Huntaways in Auckland come from farms and struggle with the transition to suburban life.
OUR APPROACH
How We Train Huntaways
We don't try to eliminate a Huntaway's natural drive — that's impossible and unfair. Instead, we teach appropriate outlets and clear rules about when barking and high-energy behaviour is acceptable. We use structured obedience to give them the job they need and teach a reliable 'quiet' command that actually works.

Common Questions
Huntaway Training FAQs
We can teach a reliable 'quiet' command and significantly reduce nuisance barking, but we won't eliminate barking entirely — it's core to who they are. The goal is teaching them when barking is appropriate and giving them enough physical and mental exercise that they don't bark from boredom or frustration.
With committed owners and proper training, yes. They need daily exercise (proper runs, not just walks), mental stimulation and a job to do. Training provides the structure and rules they need. Many Huntaways thrive in suburbia once they understand what's expected of them.
Farm-to-suburb transitions are challenging because everything changes — sounds, spaces, expectations. We create a structured transition plan that introduces suburban life gradually, teaches appropriate indoor behaviour and provides the exercise and mental stimulation they need. Patience and consistency are key.
More than most suburban owners expect. Huntaways were bred to work all day on hill country. In suburbia, they need at least 60-90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily plus mental stimulation. However, structured training sessions count as mental exercise, and a mentally tired Huntaway is much calmer than a physically exhausted one.

Huntaways are bred to bark and drive sheep across rugged NZ hill country. That incredible drive and vocal nature doesn't always translate well to suburban Auckland. We help Huntaway owners manage their unique breed.
