A guide to the best beaches for dogs along the Rodney coast, from Mangawhai Heads to Pakiri. Includes off-leash rules, seasonal restrictions and tips for beach training.
Living on the Rodney coast with a dog is a genuine privilege. Here's a practical guide to the best dog-friendly beaches in the area.
Dogs permitted off-leash from May through September. During summer, dogs must be on a lead. Best for high-energy dogs that love to run. The sand is firm near the waterline, which is easier on joints.
Dogs allowed but must be on a lead during summer. The northern end towards the spit is quieter and more dog-friendly. Watch for dotterel nesting areas from September to March.
Wide open space with minimal crowds. One of the best spots in Rodney for genuine off-leash freedom. Ideal for distance recall training. Horse riders also use the beach, so ensure reliable recall.
Calm, sheltered beach in the Mahurangi Harbour. Perfect for introducing puppies to the beach environment. The calm water and gentle slope make it far less intimidating than the surf beaches.
Small but pleasant, with coastal walking tracks towards Matheson Bay. Good for dogs that enjoy varied terrain — sand, rock and bush track.
Tawharanui Regional Park — dogs completely prohibited. It's a predator-proof sanctuary protecting kiwi and other native wildlife. Goat Island Marine Reserve — dogs not allowed. Fines apply at both.
Start with recall on a long line before going off-leash. Build distraction tolerance gradually. Be aware of wildlife — shorebirds, penguins and seals all use Rodney beaches. Rinse your dog after every visit.
