SAFE KIDS SAFE DOGS
Creating safer interactions between children and dogs through education and awareness
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to create safer interactions between children and dogs through education and awareness. By teaching children how to properly interact with dogs and helping families understand canine behaviour, we aim to prevent dog-related incidents and foster positive relationships between kids and their four-legged friends.
WHY WE DO IT
The statistics are alarming, but education can make a difference
Dog-related injuries nationwide (2022)
Incidents involving children under 12
Dog bite incidents in Auckland (2023)
Children Aged 5-9 Face the Highest Risk
Children in this age group have the most difficulty recognizing warning signs in dog behavior. Many incidents occur in household settings where children and dogs interact regularly. Through proper education, these incidents can be significantly reduced.
WHAT WE TEACH
Comprehensive education covering all aspects of safe dog interaction
Safe Approaches
Teaching children how to properly approach and interact with dogs, including asking permission and reading body language.
Recognizing Stress Signals
Helping children identify signs of stress, fear or discomfort in canine behaviour before situations escalate.
Proper Handling Techniques
Demonstrating correct ways to pet, play with, and handle dogs safely and respectfully.
Responding to Aggression
Teaching appropriate responses when encountering aggressive behavior or feeling unsafe around dogs.
Responsible Ownership
Promoting responsible dog ownership practices within families and communities.
